2024 Summer Olympics
The 2024 Summer Olympics, which will be officially known as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad if the present naming convention and frequency is unchanged, are an international athletic event that might be organized by the International Olympic Committee. The winning bid should be announced in 2017 at the 129th IOC Session.
Potential bids
Africa
- In March 2011 the Moroccan Government confirmed that they would begin construction of an 80,000-seat stadium in preparation for a bid for either the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics[1]
- Durban was the most likely South African candidate for the 2020 Summer Olympics, before the country withdrew its bid.[2] There is a possibility that they will bid for the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics.[3]
Asia
- Dubai was considering a bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics, though they now instead plan on bidding for the 2024 Games.[4] They have also expressed interest in bidding for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.[5]
- Taiwan's capital and largest city may put in a bid in accordance with a campaign promise made by now-president Ma Ying-jeou while he was running for president in 2008. It is seen as the culmination of a build-up in hosting sporting events for Taipei and the rest of Taiwan. Taipei hosted the 2009 Deaflympics while Kaohsiung hosted the 2009 World Games.[6]
Europe
-
- The French capital was unsuccessful in vying to be the host city for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. The year 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Summer Olympics held in Paris. The former French Minister of Sports, Jean-Francois Lamour, had made it clear that 2024 represents a choice objective for a Parisian bid. €35 million will be planned to build new sports venues around Paris in order to improve quality of the future Parisian bid.[7][8][9] They withdraw from bidding for the 2020 Summer Olympics edition on July 12th 2011 after Annecy's 2018 Winter Olympics bid was rejected, and claimed that Paris would bid for the 2024 summer edition instead.[10]
-
- For the first time, the second largest city in France, after Paris, with a population of 850,000 is planning a bid for the 2024. Located on the southeast coast of France, Marseille successfully co-hosts the Euro 2016 with Paris, was designated by the European Union "European Capital of Culture" with Košice in 2013 [8] and The 6th World Water Forum will be held in Marseille in 2012.
- The organization of the Games in Copenhagen has proposed a joint bid in the Oresund Region and is investigated by the Danish government.[11] A cooperation with Malmö and other cities in the region has been proposed.[12] Malmö politicians are positive to the idea of arranging Olympics together with the neighboring country, Denmark.[13] If the Oresund Region bids and wins, it will be the first Olympics organized by two different countries at the same time. Several multi-national bids have been made before, but none have yet been accepted by the IOC.
- The Dutch city of Amsterdam showed interest to bid for the Games.[14] Amsterdam is noted for hosting the 1928 Summer Olympics. In November 2011, Amsterdam was awarded the 2016 European Athletics Championships.[15]
- Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister, Borys Kolesnikov, stated that in the case that Ukraine successfully co-hosts the Euro 2012 with Poland, it may potentially place a bid for hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.[16] Ukraine is also planning a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
- Saint Petersburg is weighing up a bid to bring the 2024 Summer Games to Russia. Marat Bariev of the Olympic Committee added that the plans were still at an early stage and there were potential rival bidders within Russia: Kazan, building on its Universiade development.[17] In October 2011, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak stated that Saint Petersburg "is up to the task of holding the Summer Games of 2024." [18]
North America
- On 10 July 2007 it was revealed that the Canadian Olympic Committee had begun work on a potential bid for the 2024 games for Toronto, the capital of Ontario and largest city in Canada.[19] This would be Toronto's third bid for the summer Olympic games, after unsuccessful bids for the 1996 and 2008 games, but a successful bid for the 2015 Pan American Games. On August 11, 2011, the Toronto's Mayoral office announced it would not be pursuing a 2020 bid.[20] As of September 2011 it was reported that there has been talk of Toronto potentially bidding for the 2024 Games.[21] At the end of the 2011 Pan American Games, Allen Vansen, who serves as senior vice president of operations for the 2015 Pan American Games stated that if Toronto does a good job at hosting the Pan Am games that Toronto could make a future bid.[22] The bid organizers for the 2015 Pan American Games are planning in launching a campaign for bringing the 2024 Olympics to Toronto.[23]
Mexican President Felipe Calderon stated that Mexico will pursue a bid for a future Summer Olympic Games. He declared this at a meal with the Mexican athletes that won a medal at the Pan American Games: Guadalajara 2011.[24] Following the closing of the 2011 Pan American Games, Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez Marquez stated that Guadalajara will bid for the Olympic Games following the city's successful organization of the Pan American Games.[25]
By 2024 it will have been 28 years since the United States staged the Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996. New York City bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics and lost to London. Chicago bid for the 2016 Games but lost to Rio de Janeiro. The United States did not bid for the 2020 Olympics.
-
- Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics. Los Angeles bid to become the US applicant city for the 2016 Summer Olympics, however the USOC selected Chicago instead. In September 2011 Los Angeles was awarded the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games.[26] In November of 2011 a delegation from Los Angeles attended a seminar at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne for cities interested in bidding on future Olympic Games.[27]
-
- Larry Needle, executive director of the Philadelphia Sports Congress, said that if Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, wants to host the Olympics, its earliest realistic chance would be the 2024 Summer Games.[28] A study by eleven graduate students from the University of Pennsylvania showed that Philadelphia should consider bidding for the 2024 Olympics. The study said that one of the city's biggest challenges would be convincing the voters who select the host city that Philadelphia is a "world-class city", something that "will require strategic changes in the city’s landscape in conjunction with a persuasive marketing strategy". An unofficial Facebook page began in 2010, and has since become very popular.[29]
Oceania
By 2024 it will have been 24 years since Australia and the Oceania region had last hosted the Summer Olympics when Sydney hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics.
-
- Brisbane has been pre-selected by the Australian Olympic Committee as a likely Australian bid city. The bid has been endorsed by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman. The President of the IOC Jacques Rogge has also mentioned that Brisbane would have a high chance of receiving the games.[30] Brisbane has hosted several major sporting events including the 1982 Commonwealth Games and the 2001 Goodwill Games. The city also hosted events during the 1987 Rugby World Cup, 1992 Cricket World Cup, 2000 Summer Olympics, the 2003 Rugby World Cup and hosted the Final of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. The city previously bid for the 1992 Olympics, coming 3rd to Barcelona and Paris. This bid also coincides with a bid for Brisbane to host the 2020 World Expo and a possible bid for the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. Brisbane's neighboring Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
-
- Melbourne is considering a bid for either the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympics. The only major venue that would need to be constructed would be a rowing and canoeing course. The city hosted the 1956 Summer Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. It already has the infrastructure in place to host such an event.[31]
South America
- President of the Peruvian Institute for Sports, Arturo Woodman, said that Peru would try to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games,[32] although the games being held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 might pose a challenge as the IOC might view it as too recent for a South American return.[32]
Broadcasting
South Korea's SBS is the first television network to secure the broadcasting deals for this Games.[33]
